In preparation for the launch of their latest album, Coexist, The XX teamed up with Microsoft to create a site to showcase the “art of digital sharing”. It includes an interactive and immersive visualisation of a world map, tracking the stream of the album as it is shared around the globe.
Fans are able to move the “time slider” next to the map that tracks the album’s movements over time in the lead-up to the release. Users can share the stream themselves to spread it even further.
Today I am praising the company’s forward-thinking by choosing to put aside their marketing dollars for a mundane banner ad to test out something that is truly entertaining and unobstrusive… an INTERACTIVE MUSIC VIDEO!
Field is the name of their new HTML5 audiovisual experience and it reacts in real-time to your movement (keyboard/mouse/touch pad/touch screen).
The beats are by American electronic musician Nosaj Thing, who has produced tracks for Busdriver and remixed various songs including The XX’s “Islands” .
In order to play Field yourself, you must have Google Chrome!!
So if you’re still using the old school Firefox or Safari browser, curse yourself for not supporting HTML5 web audio, then step into to the future and download Chrome.
Hopefully you’ll be as equally thrilled that our Bobby is not only the master of soul, he also understands the sheer power of combining art with technology. With help from his label, XL Recordings , B-Reel and Google, he created an interactive experience specifically designed for the mobile web.
So if you’re reading this on your mobile device, go ahead and take Bobby’s journey into the unknown. He’ll chaperone you with his soothing voice while you’re pulling planets together, pinching to travel through an asteroid field, and swiping up and down to guide a space shuttle through the Womack Universe.
